Norvasc Amlodipine Besylate and Its Uses

Norvasc® is the besylate salt of amlodipine. It is a long-acting calcium channel blocker. This drug is used to treat high blood pressure or chest pain (angina). Amlodipine besylate is chemically described as 3-Ethyl-5-methyl (±)-2-[(2-aminoethoxy) methyl]-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-1, 4-dihydro-6-methyl-3, 5-pyridinedicarboxylate, monobenzenesulphonate. Its empirical formula is C 20H 25CIN 2O 5•C 6H 6O 3S.

Dosage

The standard initial antihypertensive oral dose of Norvasc is 5 mg to 10 mg once daily. A starting dose of 2.5 mg once daily is prescribed for small, fragile, or elderly individuals or patients with hepatic insufficiency. This dose may be used with other antihypertensive therapy.

Dosage needs to be adjusted according to each patient's medical condition, his need. Usually, titration should continue over 7 to 14 days so that the doctor can fully evaluate the patient's response to each dose level. Titration may progress more rapidly, but, if clinically necessary, provided the patient is assessed frequently.

A 5-10 mg of dose is recommended for chronic stable or vasospastic angina. In the elderly and in patients with hepatic insufficiency, the lower dose is recommended. The majority patients will need 10 mg for adequate effect.

The suggested dose range for patients with coronary artery disease is 5-10 mg once daily. In clinical studies the majority of patients required 10 mg.

Side Effects

Side effects associated with Amlodipine besylate are generally minor and reversible. The two most common side effects are headache and edema (swelling) of the lower extremities. In less common side effects, we can take in fatigue, dizziness, flushing, nausea, and palpitations. Some general adverse impacts of this treatment are allergic reaction, asthenia, back pain, hot flushes, malaise, pain, rigors, weight gain, and weight decrease.

Precautions

Before taking Norvasc amlodipine besylate, let your doctor know if you have allergy to it; or if you have any other allergies. Before using these tablets, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart disease, liver disease. While using this drug in the elderly people, you have use great care since they may be more sensitive to its side effects. These tablets should be used during pregnancy if the benefits are higher than risk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not recognized whether this drug passes into breast milk. A mother should not breast-feed his child while using this drug. Seek advice from your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interaction

Some medication can cause serious side effects if used with other drugs. Tell your doctor about all other heart or blood pressure medications you are taking. There may be other drugs that can interact with Norvasc. Your doctor should be acquainted with all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start a new drug without consulting your doctor.

Contraindications

Norvasc is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to amlodipine.

Missed Dose

If you are taking this medication daily and you have missed a dose, take it immediately as you remember. But, it is advised to skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the doses unless otherwise directed.

Overdose

Any drug taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately.

Important Notes

Do not get up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Alcohol intake can have adverse side effects. So make little use or no use of it. Alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects of Norvasc.
